Google is synonymous with search, whereas Facebook owns the social world. And both Google and Facebook want more.
At first glance, it may seem silly for both Google and Facebook to fight a war over something as different as apples and oranges. After all, online advertising is a US $31 Billion market and Google is the king with 41% share. Facebook is the numero uno social network with 800 million users (though Google+ has managed 40 million signups in the first four months).
However recent changes in online behavior is making Google jump into the social territory. And their reasoning is startlingly simple. While search has always been the first thing that most users perform when they come online for everything under the sun (from product info, movie reviews, and song downloads), Facebook is slowly changing that. Users no longer go to Google – instead they are going to their closed network of Facebook friends to get information on brands, trends, and everything else in between. And that is making Google see red, particularly when Google’s search algorithm does not have access to the social activity happening inside Facebook!
So while the titans clash, what should businesses do? Stay out of the way for now! Continue to streamline your Facebook and search strategy. Continue to create relevant content on all possible channels of communication. Once the dust settles after the clash, you can choose between Mark Zuckerberg or Larry Page!
